Four Things You Need to Know About RCFE Certification



If you plan to work or run a residential care facility in the state of California, you need to take RCFE certification classes. Both the facility and the administrator require a license. All other staff members must receive annual training. Here are four other things you need to know about RCFE certification.

Residential Care Facility

Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly care for the elderly that do not require medical intervention. These non-medical facilities are also known as Board and Care or Assisted Living facilities. People starting at the age of 60 can move into these facilities to have additional assistance with personal care activities such as bathing and dressing.

Qualifications for Staff

As mentioned, administrators must take RCFE certification classes and pass the state exam. Each employee must take training courses each year. There are varying requirements for the administrator depending on the size of the facility, but all administrators must be 21 years old with a high school diploma at minimum. Some additional college work is required for those in larger facilities.

Financing Their Stay

There are many ways people pay to stay at an RCFE, but Medicare is not one of them. Medi-Cal also does not cover RCFEs. Most residents pay through other means including long-term care insurance and savings accounts. There are no cost restrictions for how much the facility can charge, but most base them on the current market rates.

Caring for Dementia

In order to accept seniors with dementia, the administrator and staff require special training. All facilities must receive some dementia care even those that do not advertise for the services. Dementia residents may stay in an RCFE until they require more medical attention.

The state of California requires these RCFE certification classes to provide their elderly with the best experience possible. With the growing aging population, RCFE administration can be a great career path for many.
