How to Become a Certified RCFE Administrator

To become certified as an administrator for residential care facilities for the elderly, there are three main steps you need to go through. By following this list of actions that will lead you from RCFE administrator training to approval, you can speed through the process and get moving on your business.

Take a Training Course

If you’re starting out with no prior administrator licenses, you’ll have to complete the Initial Certification Training Program as given by an Administrator Certification Section approved provider, such as Assisted Living Education. However, if you already have a valid Nursing Home Administrator license, you can simply complete 12 classroom hours of instruction in core subject matter instead.

Complete and Pass the Mandatory Examination

After your RCFE administrator training course, you need to schedule a standardized exam with the California Department of Social Services within two months and pass it with a score of at least 70 percent. You’ll be graded within seven days and will receive a letter telling you whether you passed or not. If you receive a congratulatory letter, you can proceed to the next step. If you don’t pass the test, you can take it two more times within the 60-day window to try again. RFCE applicants who have an active NHA license can complete other requirements to become certified without taking the test.

Turn in an Application

Once approved, you have one month (30 days) from the date of the letter to complete an application packet and send it to the Administrator Certification Section. Extensions will be granted in certain circumstances. Your packet should include your congratulatory letter, application form and a check or money order to cover the nonrefundable processing fee. It can be made out to the California Department of Social Services and must include your certificate number. You also need your Certificate of Completion, a Criminal Record Statement and a completed request for statewide and national background checks.

If you want to run residential care for the elderly, you’ll need to get the correct certification. By completing RCFE administrator training and following these simple steps, you’ll be on your way to running your own facility in no time.
