How to Become an RCFE Administrator

If you’re looking at becoming an administrator for a Residential Care for the Elderly facility (RCFE) then you may have a few questions. Continue reading to learn more about what they do, what the pay may look like, and how to obtain your RCFE administrator certification.

What They Do

A certified RCFE administrator is responsible for caring for elderly patients who can no longer live independently. They may assist the patient with a variety of daily needs from taking medication and eating, to coordinating additional medical services. They commonly supervise other staff in the performance of these duties. They may also work in a more directorial role in larger facilities, coordinating activities of assistant administrators and handling any concerns that arise. Since RCFE facilities provide 24-hour care they also may work long shifts and remain on call after hours.

Pay Scale

Statistics show that the median pay for those who have obtained their RCFE administrator certification and found placement is estimated to be between $48,000 and $94,500 annually. Rates may vary state to state and depend on the home or facility you work at, as well as exact position. Benefits also may vary depending on location and job.

Certification

Certification for RCFE administration can be had through classes at Assisted Living Education. In the state of California an 80 hour class is required to obtain certification. In most cases the class is offered with six hours live instruction and the rest through online courses. After you’ve completed the class you will have to pass the state exam. Additional requirement for certification include being over 21 and having a GED prior to joining the certification class. If you work in a community with 15 residents or more you may be asked to obtain additional education or certification.
