What You Need To Know About an RCFE License

California requires all assisted living facilities to have an RCFE license to operate. Administrators must be licensed and trained. All staff members require additional training as well. Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly takes care of those unable to live on their own but not requiring medical care. Here’s everything you need to know about the licensing requirements.

Facility

A senior care facility qualifies as an assisted living facility once it reaches 16 beds. Once it is determined the facility is an assisted living facility, the state of California requires the facility to obtain the licensing. Additional requirements may be in effect for residential care facilities.

Administrator

Operating an assisted living facility requires an RCFE administrator license. Programs are available that last about 80 hours followed by an exam of 100 questions. Passage of the exam and license application are the final steps. The larger the facility, the more likely the administrator also needs college coursework completion, though a full degree is not required.

Staff

All staff needs to complete training for the facility to maintain their licensing. Working with seniors can be challenging work. Proper training ensures that staff is prepared to handle difficult situations in an appropriate and effective manner. Completion of 40 hours of training provides hands-on experience before staff even meets with patients.

Continuing

RCFE continuing education is necessary to maintain your license. To maintain your license as an administrator, you must complete 40 hours of continuing education. Qualified teachers can help teach the rules and regulations and keep the staff up-to-date on any recent changes and expectations in effect.

Caring for seniors can be a rewarding job in an industry that is rapidly growing and continuing to expand. Whether your facility offers specialized services or serves a general population, the facility and staff must have RCFE licenses. Continuing education ensures the staff has the latest information and training to continue administering to their patients.
