How To Become a Residential Care Facility Director

Working with older adults at a residential care facility for the elderly can be an incredibly rewarding career choice. Becoming a director takes time and dedication, but it can be a great fit for someone who has the drive, passion and necessary skills.

Education

Each state has its own requirements regarding the minimum qualifications for directors. An RCFE license needs to be obtained, along with any necessary college degrees. Other licenses and certifications may be required depending on the area. The tasks that need to be completed in the role run the range from managing the budget to hiring and overseeing staff members to correctly handling medical documentation. Therefore, an education that encompasses some forms of accounting, business and marketing, along with something in the health field will be an asset.

Experience

Getting experience working with the elderly or in a facility should be a priority early on. Internships can be a great way to learn about the different roles facility members play in the organization and what the daily routine is like. Entry-level jobs can also be taken during or after college. Try to find employment at a place where moving up the ladder is likely, and try to follow a career path that leads to becoming a director. Continue to learn through classes and seminars to develop skills and increase the likelihood of promotions. Directors must have an RCFE license, so anyone who is climbing the ladder should think about obtaining one to show that they are a good candidate for the job.

As the population ages, residential facilities for the elderly will be depended on to care for an increasing number of people. Becoming a director can be a great way to help people and have a fulfilling career. Anyone who is thinking about opening a facility or trying to take charge of an existing one should concentrate on their education, credentials and skillset.
